If you are a regular reader of my posts, you know that I am attempting to embrace artificial intelligence (AI) tools and services for both personal learning and growth and to benefit my students’ learning. Consequently, I was intrigued when I first discovered Suno, a service the creates songs in a variety of different genres based on simple text prompts.

A part of my curriculum with seniors is some Christian leadership training. We engage in a variety of activities to help students recognize the leadership opportunities that are availble to them both now and in the future, and the skills they need to develop to take advantage of those opportunities. As we closed our leadership work together, I decided to try something new. I asked them to use Suno to create a song that captures their personal leadership philosophy. I encourged them to select a musical style that that connects with their personality. I appreciate Suno as a tool for this assignment since one can edit the lyrics of a song to better fit their needs. You don’t just need to rely on a single prompt but can use that as a starting point.
Once students had created their songs we did some group analysis of the products. Here are the expectations for the group activity, which ended with individual reflections:
- Meet with your group
- Listen to the song each person created about leadership, reviewing the lyrics
- Provide comments on what you think works well and what doesn’t
- Make a submission that includes each of the following:
- A list of group members and the title of their song
- A paragraph description of the song which is most aligned with the person’s leadership beliefs and personal characteristics. Be sure to share some reasons why you feel this way.
- A paragraph description of the feedback you received on your song, what you might edit with the music in the future, and why.
Overall, I was pleased with the results. My sense is that my students enjoyed the novelty of the activity, but it also led to deeper thinking about leadership principles and the application of those principles in their lives.
Here are some examples of leadership songs created by my students using Suno:
